Turnover hotels recorded the strongest growth
Seasonally adjusted turnover in accommodation services, including hotels and holiday parks, rose by 3.7 percent in Q1 2023 relative to the previous quarter. Hotels had 4.2 percent more turnover than in Q4. Other acc. services such as holiday parks and campsites generated 2.2 percent more turnover. The volume of sales (i.e. turnover adjusted for price changes) in accommodation services increased by 1.2 percent; it was up for hotels, but declined for the other types of accommodation.
In Q1, food and beverage outlets gained 1.9 percent compared to the previous quarter. Fast-food restaurants (including snack bars and cafeterias) recorded the strongest growth: 3.8 percent. Turnover gains amounted to 2.9 percent for canteens and catering and 1.7 percent for restaurants. The cafés were the only sector to record a decrease (-1.4 percent). The volume sales of food and beverage outlets declined by 0.9 percent.

Turnover accommodation and food services up by almost 38 percent in Q1 year on year
The accommodation and food services sector achieved 37.8 percent more turnover in Q1 than in Q1 2022. The strong growth was due to a hard lockdown in the first quarter of 2022 until 25 January. Even after that, the availability of accommodation and food services was still restricted due to some coronavirus measures.
In Q1, hotels recorded the largest turnover increase acrossthe accommodation and food services sector at more than 68 percent. Holiday park rental companies and campsites recorded a turnover increase of over 5 percent. This was due to price increases, because the volume shrank by 4 percent.
The turnover increase at cafés was almost 43 percent. Restaurants achieved almost 40 percent more turnover year on year. Fast food restaurants recorded a year-on-year turnover increase of 18 percent. Finally, canteens and catering companies had over 48 percent more turnover than one year previously.

Sentiment among hotel and catering entrepreneurs improving
Of all industries (excluding energy and finance), accommodation and food services showed the highest increase in entrepreneurial confidence at the beginning of Q2 2023. Entrepreneurs in this sector are much more positive about the expected turnover. In addition, they have less negative expectations about economic developments than at the beginning of the year.
