Resilience: Later
- The robustness of the biosphere is under pressure. The trend in the area of green and blue space (green and freshwater areas) per capita is decreasing, and in 2021 surplus nitrogen levels affected 64.4 percent of land-based nature areas.
- Society is robust. Trust in other people and trust in institutions are both relatively high. Trust in other people is increasing.
- The economy is robust. Gross labour participation and the share of the population with higher education are increasing and are high compared with other countries. Median solvency of non-financial companies is also increasing.

The well-being of future generations depends on the resources the current generation passes on in the long term. The question here is whether the major systems that enable our well-being – biosphere, society, economy – are robust enough to absorb major (external) shocks.
The robustness of the biosphere is under pressure. The trend in the area of green and blue space (green and freshwater areas) per capita is decreasing. These developments point to decreasing robustness. Nitrogen deposition and land nature are both stable in the medium and short term. However, in 2021, 64.4 percent of nature on land was affected by excess nitrogen levels. The share of renewable energy in total final energy consumption shows an upward trend, although consumption of renewable energy is relatively low compared with other countries. In 2022, the Netherlands ranked 23rd of the EU27 countries.
Dutch society is robust. Trust in other people and trust in institutions are both relatively high. The Netherlands ranks second on both indicators in the EU27. Trust in other people is trending upwards, but social cohesion in residential neighbourhoods no longer shows an increasing trend.
The Dutch economy is robust. Gross labour participation and the percentage of higher educated population are high compared with other countries and are both trending upward. The median solvency of non-financial companies also shows an increasing trend.
