Figures relating to sex and gender

These figures are based on data from the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP). In addition to the categories of ‘man’ and ‘woman’, the BRP also includes the category of ‘gender unknown’. This is used for people whose biological sex has never been ascertained (either at birth or when they arrived in the Netherlands), and it is now also used by non-binary persons who have been granted legal permission to register as officially non-binary. There are too few people in the category of ‘gender unknown’ (350 people of the entire population on 1 January 2024) to be able to use it for statistical purposes, because it includes too few data points to make reliable statistical observations. However, in order to ensure the most comprehensive possible picture of the population of the Netherlands, the category of ‘gender unknown’ has been included along with the category of 'women’.
