Family migration

Family migration includes family reunification and family formation.

Family reunification refers to the settlement in the Netherlands of people in families that already existed before migrating; one or more family members come to live with family members who have already moved to the Netherlands. These can include marriage (partners), minor children and parents who come to live with their children. Family reunification often occurs after labour migration or asylum migration.

Family formation refers to the settlement in the Netherlands of persons who intend to get married, enter into a partnership, or cohabit with a partner already living in the Netherlands but with whom the person has never previously cohabited.
