For people who are living in poverty, we also look at how far below the poverty threshold their income is. To do this, we use the median percentage income shortfall relative to the poverty threshold. ‘Median’ means that half of those living in poverty have an income shortfall smaller than the median, and the other half will have an income shortfall that is larger than (or equal to) the median.
