A detainee is defined as a person who is detained in a penitentiary institution in the Netherlands, such as a house of detention or prison, either awaiting trial (pre-trial detention), or serving an unconditional custodial sentence or some other sentence imposed by a court of law, or awaiting extradition/deportation, or awaiting placement in a special institution. Only criminal detainees are included here; those in temporary custody due to their immigration status are not included. A person is defined as having previously been in detention if he/she has been released from detention at least once before since 2005. Back to article
