Standardised mortality figures

Standardisation allows for comparisons to be made over the decades, and is done by converting figures from one year to another (standard) year, based on age or sex. In this news release, the age composition of the Dutch population in 2023 is used as the standard.

The graph showing accidental drownings by origin shows the standardised death rate per 100 thousand inhabitants. These relative figures relate to the number of inhabitants by origin. Because the age composition of the population of Dutch origin is different from the age composition of the population of non-Dutch origin, the data are based on the adjusted mortality rate per 100,000 of the population according to the age composition of the population of Dutch origin (Standard Mortality = SM).
