Juvenile rehabilitation

Juvenile rehabilitation is a combination of counselling and monitoring for young people aged 12 years and older, who have been in contact with the police or truancy officer before their 18th birthday and who have received an official warning.

In the case of young adults aged 18 to 21, juvenile criminal law can also be applied on the grounds of adolescent criminal law, in cases where the offender’s level of development warrants this. The young person receives tailor-made counselling from a juvenile probation officer to prevent him or her from getting into further problems.
Juvenile rehabilitation can be imposed by a juvenile court magistrate or the public prosecutor. It may also be initiated in the voluntary framework by the Dutch Child Care and Protection Board.
