Turnover in accommodation services down
Seasonally adjusted turnover in accommodation services, including hotels and holiday parks, fell by 1.4 percent in Q3 2023 relative to the previous quarter. Hotels generated 1.7 percent less turnover than in Q2. Other accommodation services such as holiday parks generated 0.5 percent less turnover. Sales volume (turnover adjusted for price changes) in accommodation services decreased by 4.8 percent.
In Q3, turnover of food and beverage outlets (seasonally adjusted) increased by 0.9 percent compared to the previous quarter. Canteens and catering recorded the strongest turnover growth, at 1.4 percent. Cafés and restaurants both recorded an increase of 0.8 percent. Fast-food restaurants (including snack bars and cafeterias) achieved a growth of 0.6 percent. Sales volume for food and beverage outlets fell by 1.1 percent.

Turnover in accommodation and food services up by nearly 8 percent in Q3 year on year
The accommodation and food services sector achieved 7.7 percent higher turnover in Q3 than in the same quarter of 2022. Year on year, turnover has increased (substantially) in each quarter since Q2 2021. Sales volume (turnover adjusted for price changes) increased by 0.9 percent.
In the accommodation services, hotels recorded a turnover increase of 6 percent, while holiday park rental companies and campsites recorded a 3.5 percent increase relative to Q3 2022.
Canteens and catering companies generated 14 percent more turnover compared to one year previously, the strongest growth in the accommodation and food services sector. Restaurants increased their turnover by 9.2 percent year on year. Fast-food restaurants recorded a year-on-year turnover increase of over 7 percent, and for cafés this amounted to 4.5 percent.

Sentiment among hotel and catering entrepreneurs deteriorated
Business confidence in accommodation and food services decreased from -10,8 at the beginning of Q3 to -13.1 at the beginning of Q4. Entrepreneurs in this sector were less negative about the economic climate in the past three months, but more negative about the economic climate for the next three months. At the start of Q4, business confidence was negative in almost all Dutch sectors.
