Holdings wishing to produce organically are required to work according to organic farming standards for a certain period of time without being allowed to market their products as organic. They are referred to as ‘farms under conversion’. The duration of their conversion depends on their type of activity and they may take between six weeks and three years. The organisation in charge of monitoring the conversion process and issuing the certification is called Skal Biocontrole. Only when a farm has received certification can its products be marketed as organic.
Certified organic farming products are entitled to the organic EU label, also known as the Euro Leaf. Regulation (EU) 2018/848 sets out the rules on organic production and labelling of organic products.
