In September 2022, the mood among Dutch manufacturers is less positive for the second consecutive month. Producer confidence has decreased from 4.6 in August to 2.6 in September, as reported today by Statistics Netherlands (CBS). This is mainly due to the fact that manufacturers are less positive about their order positions.

Producer confidence is still higher than the long-term average of 1.1. It reached an all-time high (12.7) in November 2021 and an all-time low (-28.7) in April 2020.

Opinion about order positions deteriorated in particular

Manufacturers are mainly less positive about their order positions. Furthermore, they are negative about their future output for the first time since January 2020. On the other hand, they are less negative about their current stocks.

The majority of manufacturers consider their order position to be strong rather than weak, given the time of year.

However, manufacturers who anticipate output to decrease over the next three months outnumber those expecting an increase. In addition, more manufacturers define their current stock of finished products as too large rather than too small.

Confidence down in almost all industries

In September, producer confidence is lower than in the previous month in almost all industries. As in the previous months, confidence in the electrotechnical and machinery industry is by far the highest. Manufacturers in the transport and metal industry are positive as well.

Manufacturing output over 4 percent up in July

In July 2022, the average daily output generated by the Dutch manufacturing industry was up by 4.1 percent on July 2021. The growth is again less substantial than in the previous months.

Producer confidence in Germany also deteriorated

Germany is an important market for the Dutch manufacturing industry. In September, German producer confidence according to the Business Climate Index of the IFO Institute deteriorated. Companies are less optimistic about the current situation and more pessimistic about the coming six months. In July, the average daily output generated by the German manufacturing industry declined by 1.4 percent year on year, as reported by Destatis.
