Again excess mortality in all weeks, but lower in August

In the last week of August (week 35: 29 August to 4 September 2022 inclusive), the estimated number of deaths stood at 2,900. This is slightly less than in the previous week (2,993) and more than the expected number for this period. There were altogether 1,300 more deaths than expected in August, with excess mortality in all of the weeks. Mortality was up mainly among long-term care recipients and people aged 80 and over. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the latest provisional weekly mortality figures.

The mortality figures for August cover five weeks, namely weeks 31 through 35 (1 August to 4 September 2022 inclusive). In each of these weeks, mortality was higher than expected and fell outside the usual range of fluctuations, resulting in excess mortality. Excess mortality was also recorded in all weeks of July. In that month, on average almost 350 more deaths than expected were recorded each week; by August, this had decreased to 250.

Excess mortality in August mainly among long-term care recipients

In week 35, mortality was at more or less the same level as in the previous week among people receiving care under the Long-term Care Act (Wlz), including residents of nursing homes and institutions for the disabled. Among the rest of the population, mortality declined slightly, based on the estimate. There were approximately 1,100 deaths among long-term care recipients and slightly more than 1,850 deaths among the rest of the population. This was more than expected for both groups; among long-term care users, there was a small margin of excess mortality.

In the whole month of August, 750 more deaths than expected were recorded among long-term care recipients. There was excess mortality in three of the five weeks. Among the rest of the population, there were around 550 excess deaths in August. Mortality fell within the range of usual fluctuations in each week except week 34.

Elevated mortality in August mainly among over-80s

Among the population aged 80 and over, mortality declined slightly in week 35, to just over 1,550 deaths (estimated). This is approximately 100 more than expected for this period. In the whole of August, there were slightly over 750 more deaths than expected among the over-80s. There was excess mortality in four of the five weeks in this age group.

Among people aged 65 to 79 years, an estimated 950 deaths were recorded in week 35, nearly 100 more than expected. An estimated 400 excess deaths were recorded among this group over the whole month of August, with excess mortality in three of the five weeks.

Among people under 65, mortality in week 35 was estimated at 410, slightly more than expected. This age group had over 150 more deaths than expected for the month of August. Only in week 34 there was excess mortality.

Excess mortality in August mainly among women

In week 35, there were an estimated 1,450 deaths among men and 1,500 among men. This was higher than expected for women in particular nd excess mortality was recorded. There were 400 more male deaths than expected for the whole month of August, with excess mortality in three of the five weeks. There were around 900 more female deaths, with excess mortality in four of the five weeks.

COVID-19 mortality known up to April inclusive

The figures on (excess) mortality are based on municipal death records as received by CBS on a daily basis. These reports do not contain any information about the cause of death. CBS receives such information at a later stage via death cause certificates. The cause of death is known for all deceased persons up to and including April 2022. According to the latest CBS figures, 44,214 thousand people died due to COVID-19 between March 2020 and April 2022. Aside from the coronavirus pandemic, the Netherlands had an influenza epidemic for 13 consecutive weeks, starting in mid-March.

The figures for week 35 of 2022 are estimates, based on the assumption that 83 percent of all death records was received by CBS. CBS will publish provisional weekly mortality figures for week 35 on Friday 16 September. The figures will be more complete by then.
