Estimates based on death records received so far
In general, some time elapses between the actual date of death and the moment when this data reaches CBS. Death records are collected weekly on Thursdays. Usually, mortality data collected on Thursday include slightly over 80 percent of all deaths over the previous week. Therefore, it provides an indication of the number of deaths that can be expected for that week.
The estimate for the previous week is based on the assumption that mortality data for slightly more than 80 percent of all deaths has been received (the exact percentage is determined on the basis of death records received in the ten weeks prior to the previous week). As the percentage is uncertain, the actual number of deaths in the preceding week may be higher or lower as a result.
The death records were received faster over the last few weeks compared to the latter part of 2021. This resulted in overestimation of the number of deaths.
