The new sustainability criteria for solid biomass apply to installations with an input thermal capacity exceeding 20 MW. For biogas, modified criteria apply to installations above 2 MW. The new Directive entered into force on 1 July 2021. Therefore, consumption of solid biomass and biogas in the first half of 2021 is fully counted. The biomass unitlised in installations below these limits is also fully included.
As for liquid biomass, sustainability criteria have already been in place for a longer time. Biofuels for transport (biodiesel and biogasoline) also have their own sustainability criteria. No sustainability criteria apply to waste incineration plants.
