Mortality below expected level in February

In the last week of February (week 8, 21 to 27 February 2022 inclusive), estimated mortality stood at 3,400. This is around 50 up on the previous week (3,349) but still slightly less than expected. In all of February, there were around 550 fewer deaths than expected for that month. There were mainly fewer deaths among the over-80s and among long-term care recipients. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the latest provisional weekly mortality figures.

The mortality figures for February cover the past four weeks, i.e. weeks 5 through 8 (31 January to 27 February 2022 inclusive). Since the second week of 2022, mortality has been below the expected level. Prior to that, as of the beginning of August 2021, mortality exceeded the expected level and in almost each week fell outside the range of usual fluctuations, resulting in excess mortality. On average, there were nearly 150 fewer deaths per week than expected in February, just as in January.

Mortality among long-term care users lower than expected

Based on the estimate, in week 8 mortality rose slightly among people receiving care under the Long-term Care Act (Wlz), including residents of nursing homes and institutions for the disabled. Mortality among the rest of the population remained more or less the same. There were approximately 1,250 deaths among long-term care recipients (slightly less than expected) and 2,150 deaths among the rest of the population (around the expected level).
In all of February, there were nearly 500 fewer deaths among long-term care recipients than expected for that month. Mortality among the rest of the population was slightly lower than expected last month.

February mortality among over-80s lower than expected

With an estimated 1,950 deaths, mortality among people aged 80 and over was more or less the same in week 8. This is 100 less than expected for this period. In all of February there were at least 600 fewer deaths than expected in this age group.
Among people aged 65 to 79 years, an estimated 1,050 deaths were recorded in week 8, slightly more than expected. For the month of February, mortality among 65 to 79-year-olds was slightly higher than expected.
Among people under the age of 65, mortality in week 8 was estimated at 400, about the same as expected. For this age group, mortality in February was around the expected level for that month.

COVID-19 mortality known up to October inclusive

The figures on (excess) mortality are based on municipal death records as received by CBS on a daily basis. These reports do not contain any information about the cause of death. CBS receives such information at a later stage via death cause certificates. The cause of death is known for all deceased up to and including October 2021. According to these figures, 33,090 thousand people died due to COVID-19 between March 2020 and October 2021, as published by CBS on 1 March 2022.

Estimate for week 8

The figures for week 8 of 2022 are estimates that are based on 82 percent of the overall number of death records to be received by CBS. CBS will publish provisional weekly mortality figures for week 8 on Friday 11 March. The figures will be more complete by then.
CBS has switched from weekly to monthly reports on mortality. The StatLine table will still be updated on a weekly basis, as Mortality per week. The next news release on weekly mortality will be published on 1 April 2022.
