Week 7 mortality slightly below expected level

In the third week of February (week 7, 14 to 20 February 2022 inclusive), estimated mortality stood at 3,400. This is over 150 more than in the previous week (3,211) but still slightly below the expected level. Mortality remained more or less the same among long-term care recipients, but rose slightly among people aged 65 and over. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the latest provisional weekly mortality figures.

Mortality has been below the expected level since the second week of 2022. Previously, mortality exceeded the expected level as of the beginning of August 2021 and fell just outside the range of usual fluctuations, resulting in excess mortality in almost each week.

Mortality among long-term care users around the expected level

Based on the estimate, in week 7 mortality remained roughly the same among people receiving care under the Long-term Care Act (Wlz), including residents of nursing homes and institutions for the disabled. There were approximately 1,200 deaths among long-term care recipients, i.e. slightly more than 100 below the expected number. Mortality in this group has declined since week 50 of 2021 (mid-December); there is no more excess mortality as of the last week of 2021. Mortality has been lower than expected as of the first week of this year.
Among the rest of the population, mortality increased in week 7 based on the estimate. There were approximately 2,200 deaths among the rest of the population, i.e. 50 above the expected mortality for week 7. In this group as well, mortality has declined as of week 50 in 2021. There is no more excess mortality as of the first week of 2022.

Slightly more deaths among over-65s

With an estimated 1,950 deaths in week 7, slightly higher mortality was recorded among people aged 80 and over. This is over 100 less than expected for this period. Mortality has declined in this age group since week 49; there is no more excess mortality as of the last week of 2021. As of week 3, mortality has increased again, but has still remained below the expected level.
Among people aged 65 to 79, an estimated 1,050 deaths were recorded in week 7, slightly more than expected. In this age group as well, mortality has declined since week 49, but it remained more or less unchanged in the last few weeks of the year. It started to decline again as of the first week of this year. Since week 2, no more excess mortality has been recorded among people aged 65 to 79 as the number of deaths was consistently around the expected level.
Among people under 65, the estimated number of deaths in week 7 was slightly under 400, slightly less than expected. No more excess mortality has been recorded in this age group since week 2; there was even undermortality in week 4.

COVID-19 mortality known for the period up to September inclusive

The figures on (excess) mortality are based on municipal death records as received by CBS on a daily basis. These reports do not contain any information about the cause of death. CBS receives such information at a later stage via death cause certificates. Causes of death are known for all deceased persons up to and including September 2021. According to these figures, 32,408 thousand people died due to COVID-19 between March 2020 and September 2021, as published by CBS on 1 February 2022.

Estimate for week 7

The figures for week 7 of 2022 are estimates that are based on 81 percent of the overall number of death records to be received by CBS. CBS will publish provisional weekly mortality figures for week 7 on Friday 25 February. The figures will be more complete by then.
