Mortality slightly lower, but again excess deaths in week 49

In the second week of December (week 49: 6 to 12 December 2021 inclusive), the estimated number of deaths stood at 4,100. This is approximately 1,050 more than expected, but less than in the previous week (4,327). Mortality was elevated across all age groups and among both long-term care users and the rest of the population. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the latest provisional figures on weekly mortality.

Since the beginning of August (week 31), mortality has been above the expected level and also outside the range of usual fluctuations in almost each week, resulting in excess mortality.

In week 49, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) registered 294 COVID-19 deaths (as at 14 December).

Mortality among long-term care users unchanged

Based on the estimate, in week 49 mortality remained roughly the same among people receiving care under the Long-term Care Act (Wlz), including residents of nursing homes and institutions for the disabled. There were around 1,700 deaths among long-term care users, 550 more than expected. There has been excess mortality in this group since week 42 (mid-October).

Mortality among the rest of the population declined in week 49, based on the estimate. There were over 2,400 deaths, around 500 more than expected. In this group as well, there has been excess mortality since week 42, although this was already the case in some of the preceding weeks.

Excess mortality across all age groups in week 49

Based on the estimate, the number of deaths declined in all age groups in week 49. However, excess mortality remained.

An estimated 2,400 deaths were recorded among people aged 80 and over in week 49. This is approximately 700 more than expected for this period. There has been excess mortality in this age group since week 42. This was also the case in weeks 36, 39 and 40.

Among people aged 65 to 79 years, an estimated 1,250 deaths were recorded in week 49, nearly 300 more than expected. This age group as well has shown excess mortality since week 42. Prior to this, there was excess mortality in half of the weeks as of week 30.

Mortality among people under 65 in week 49 was estimated at 475, over 50 more deaths than expected. Excess mortality was recorded, just as in the previous two weeks and in weeks 44, 45 and 34 through 36, but not in the other weeks of the autumn period.

COVID-19 mortality known up to July inclusive

The figures on (excess) mortality are based on reports on the number of deaths received daily from the municipalities by CBS. These reports do not contain any information about the cause of death. CBS receives such information at a later stage via death cause certificates. The cause of death is known for all deceased persons up to and including July 2021. According to these figures, 31,573 people died of COVID-19 between March 2020 and July 2021, as published by CBS on 1 December.

Data sources for RIVM

To date, RIVM has registered 20,212 COVID-19 deaths, of which 17,855 were recorded up to July 2021 inclusive (as at 14 December 2021). RIVM receives data on confirmed COVID-19 deaths from the municipal health services (GGD) around the country on a daily basis. The actual COVID-19-related death count in the Netherlands is higher than these estimates for the following reasons: it is possible that not all people with COVID-19 have themselves tested, there is no reporting obligation for COVID-19 and registration sometimes takes a little longer.

Estimate for week 49

The figures for week 49 are estimates, based on 82 percent of the overall number of death records to be received by CBS. CBS will publish provisional weekly mortality figures for week 49 on Friday 24 December. The figures will be more complete by then.
