In week 25 (21 to 27 June 2021 inclusive), the estimated number of deaths stood at 2,550. This is clearly fewer than expected for this period, i.e. there was undermortality. There were approximately 200 fewer deaths than expected and nearly 300 fewer than in the previous week (2,829). In all age groups, mortality was lower than expected. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the latest provisional weekly mortality figures.

From mid-September (week 39) up to and including mid-February (week 6), weekly mortality was higher than expected. There was excess mortality until mid-January (week 3). In the following weeks, mortality was not elevated and fluctuated around the expected numbers for that period. There was a short period of excess mortality in the last week of April (week 6), but mortality continued to decline after that. In the first week of June (week 22), there was excess mortality again, but not in the following two weeks (weeks 23 and 24). The estimate for week 25 is around 200 deaths below the expected number and outside the range of usual fluctuations (this means there is undermortality based on the estimate). The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) registered 8 COVID-19 deaths in week 25 (as at 29 June).

Mortality down among long-term care users and the rest of the population

Based on the estimate, mortality declined among people receiving care under the Long-term Care Act (Wlz) in week 25. As of the last week of February (week 8), mortality in this group was below the expected level. As of the end of May (week 21), it was around the expected level. In week 25, it was lower than expected again.

The number of deaths among the rest of the population declined further in week 25, based on the estimate. Mortality was far below the expected level and just within the range of usual fluctuations. From the first week of April (week 14) to mid-May (including week 20) and in the first week of June (week 22), there was excess mortality in this group.

In week 25, there were nearly 950 deaths among long-term care users, including residents of nursing homes and institutions for the disabled. Among the rest of the population, over 1,600 deaths were recorded.

Mortality down in all age groups

Based on the estimate, mortality declined across all age groups in week 25. Mortality among people aged 80 and over was below the expected level and outside the range, which means there was undermortality. An estimated more than 1,350 deaths were recorded among the over-80s. Between the second week of February and the end of April, mortality in this age group was lower than expected. It has fluctuated around the expected level since then.

Mortality among 65- to 79-year-olds was also lower than expected in week 25, but in this age group there was no undermortality (mortality was within the range of usual fluctuations). There were slightly more than 800 deaths among people aged 65 to 79. Mortality in this age group showed an upward trend from the first week of March (week 9), with a decline starting in the last week of April (week 17). From the end of March (week 13) to mid-May (including week 20), there was excess mortality. At the beginning of June (weeks 22 and 23) as well, this age group saw excess mortality. Mortality declined after that.

Based on the estimate, mortality among people under 65 was just below the expected level in week 25. There were slightly more than 350 deaths. In this age group, there was excess mortality between the start of April (week 14) and the end of April (week 17). This was also the case in mid-May (week 19) and at the beginning of June (week 22). Mortality declined after that.

* Provisional figures. Week 25 in 2021 is an estimate.

COVID-19 mortality known up to March inclusive

The figures on (excess) mortality are based on daily reports on the number of deaths received by CBS. These reports do not contain any information about the cause of death. CBS receives such information at a later stage via a death cause certificate. The cause of death is known for all deceased up to and including March 2021. According to these figures, 28,747 thousand people died of COVID-19 between March 2020 and March 2021, as published by CBS on 1 July. Excess mortality during the first wave and the second wave (up to and including March 2021) is entirely attributable to mortality from the novel coronavirus.

Data sources for RIVM

To date, RIVM has registered 17,744 COVID-19 deaths. These include 16,638 recorded until March 2021 inclusive (as at 29 June 2021). RIVM receives data on confirmed COVID-19 deaths from municipal health services (GGD) around the country on a daily basis. The actual COVID-19-related death count in the Netherlands is higher because of the following reasons: it is possible that not all people with COVID-19 have themselves tested, there is no reporting obligation for COVID-19 and registration sometimes takes a little longer.

Estimate for week 25

The figures for week 25 are estimates, based on 84 percent of the overall number of death records to be received by CBS. CBS will publish provisional weekly mortality figures for week 25 on Friday 9 July. The figures will be more complete by then.

CBS will switch from weekly to monthly reports on mortality. However, the StatLine table will be available on a weekly basis, under Mortality per week. The next news release on weekly mortality will be published on 6 August. In July, CBS will publish a news release providing an overview of mortality during the second wave.
