Decline in mortality continued in week 9

In week 9 (1 to 7 March 2021 inclusive), the estimated number of deaths stood at nearly 3,100. This is lower than the expected number for this period and nearly 100 down on the previous week (3,175). There were mainly fewer deaths among people aged 80 and over. Mortality among long-term care users declined further as well. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on the provisional weekly mortality figures.

Since week 39 of 2020, weekly mortality has been higher than expected. In week 7, the number of deaths was more or less the same as the expected mortality for this period. In week 8, it was lower than expected. Estimated mortality for week 9 is nearly 300 deaths below the expected number for this period. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) registered 171 COVID-19 deaths in week 9 (as at 9 March).

Mortality further down among long-term care users

In week 9, the number of deaths among people receiving care under the Long-term Care Act (Wlz) declined further. Mortality among the rest of the population continued to decline as well. There were over 1,100 deaths among long-term care users, including residents of nursing homes and institutions for the disabled. Among the rest of the population, nearly 2,000 deaths were recorded.

Further decline in mortality among the over-80s

In week 9, estimated mortality was down among people aged 80 years and over. Mortality in this age group has been lower than expected since week 6. More than 1,700 deaths were estimated among people aged 80 years and over, around 950 deaths among people aged 65 to 79 and around 400 deaths among people under the age of 65.

COVID-19 mortality known up to November inclusive

The figures on (excess) mortality are based on daily reports on the number of deaths received by CBS. These reports do not contain any information about the cause of death. CBS receives such information at a later stage via a death cause certificate. The cause of death is known for all deceased up to and including November 2020. According to these figures, slightly over 16,000 people died of COVID-19 between March and November 2020, as published by CBS on 10 March. Excess mortality during the first wave and during the first ten weeks of the second wave is entirely attributable to mortality from the novel coronavirus.

Data sources for RIVM

To date, RIVM has registered 15,916 COVID-19 deaths. These include 9,715 recorded until November 2020 inclusive (as at 9 March 2021). RIVM receives data on confirmed COVID-19 deaths from municipal health services (GGD) around the country on a daily basis. The actual COVID-19-related death count in the Netherlands is likely to turn out higher for the following reasons: It is possible that not all people with COVID-19 have themselves tested, there is no reporting obligation for COVID-19, and registration sometimes takes a little longer.

Estimate for week 9

The figures for week 9 are estimates, based on 83 percent of the overall number of death records to be received by CBS. CBS will publish provisional weekly mortality figures for week 9 on Friday 19 March. The figures will be more complete by then.
