Accidental falls

Accidental falls are accidents caused by unintentional falling, tripping or slipping of a person.

The related ICD-10 codes for causes of death are W00-W19 and X59. In case of hospitalisation, the ICD-10 codes are W00-W19.

Research shows that a disease such as dementia is the cause of this in 70 to 80 percent of the cases among the over-75s. Deterioration of posture reflexes and walking pattern is part of the disease profile.

The figures in this news release are only related to persons who reside in the Netherlands and who are registered in the Key Register of Persons (BRP).
Falling accidents involving a transport vehicle (such as a bicycle, (light) moped or mobility scooter) are not registered as accidental falls but as transport accidents.
