Natural gas in underground storage facilities is natural gas that has previously been extracted in the Netherlands or abroad and is stored in empty gas fields or salt caves. The storage facilities serve to meet demand at times when it is high, e.g. during cold periods. During warm periods, the facilities are replenished. Natural gas in storage facilities is not the same as the reserves of natural gas that has not (yet) been extracted. These reserves constitute proven and commercially producible quantities of natural gas present in underground deposits.
