In line with European commitments, the share of renewable energy is based on energetic final energy consumption, i.e. consumption of energy by end-user sectors (manufacturing industry, households, services, agriculture and transport) for energetic applications. This is excluding consumption for non-energetic applications, e.g. petroleum as raw material for plastics and losses during energy conversions. The calculation is based on calculation rules included in the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive. These deviate moderately from the rules for the national energy balance. As a result, final consumption of energy in the renewable energy statistic is not exactly equal to energetic final consumption from the national energy balance.
