Defence expenditure
Public expenditure on defence is defined as all expenditure by the Dutch government and various national foundations and organisations (including research institutes) which are related to the function national defence according to the Classification of the Functions of Government 1999 (COFOG):
National defence includes army, navy, air force and related activities for the protection of the population, military aid abroad (international peacekeeping missions) and defence policy.
Costs related to the military police are only partly included in the defence budget. Costs related to police training missions in conflict zones are not included in the defence budget as these missions serve no military purpose. Amounts have been adjusted for internal flows between the government and the national foundations and organisations in order to avoid double-counting.
