Suicide rate

Number of suicides per 100 thousand inhabitants. To enable comparison between years, figures are standardised: figures from one year are converted to the other (standard) year based on age or gender. The first graph in this release shows the suicide rates in the years 1970-2014 so that each year in the series contains the (virtual) figure as if that year would have had the same age structure as 2014. By standardising, differences in age structure of the population are accounted for, and figures can be compared more easily, so a real increase or decrease is shown. In this article, the age structure of the population in 2014 is used as the standard.
