Since 1 January 2012, the rules for road tax exemption have become stricter. Motor vehicles aged at least 30 years were exempt, a transitional scheme applied to 25 to 30-year-old cars. On 1 January 2014, a more rigid road tax regime was introduced and only classic cars aged 40 years or older are exempt from road tax. A special rate applies to classic cars with petrol engines manufactured in the period 1975-1987. Diesel and LPG-powered cars built after 1975 are no longer exempt.
