Life expectancy in the Caribbean Netherlands approximately the same as in the Netherlands
Statistics Netherlands announced today that life expectancy at birth in the Caribbean Netherlands is 80.2 years (1 January 2013), i.e. 0.9 years lower than in the Netherlands.
Life expectancy at birth in the Caribbean Netherlands is 80.2 years for both genders, i.e. 0.9 years lower than in the Netherlands. At 65, the difference in life expectancy is reduced to only 0.1 years.
As the population in Caribbean Netherlands is relatively small, the calculation method for life expectancy of the European part of the Netherlands was adjusted: the CBS mortality table is not calculated by age with a ceiling of 99 years, but by five-year age group with a ceiling of 85 years. Subsequently, regression is applied to level out fluctuations over the years.
Since 2010, Bonaire, St Eustatius and Saba are special municipalities of the Netherlands proper.
