Responsibility of the municipalities
As of 1 January 2015, Dutch municipalities become fully responsible for the support and care of chronically ill, elderly and disabled people under the Social Support Act (WMO) in terms of support, short stay care and related transport.
Apart from support, a small part of personal care will be transferred to the WMO as of 1 January 2015. Most of personal care will come under the Care Insurance Act (ZVW). The responsibility for home help has already been transferred to the Dutch municipalities in 2007.
Care for young chronically ill and disabled people also becomes the responsibility of the municipalities as of 1 January 2015. This type of care comes under the new Youth Care Act.
