Number of registered thefts further down in 2013

In 2013, the police registered 640 thousand thefts, i.e. 38 per thousand residents. The rate has gradually fallen since 2005, when the theft rate was 47 per one thousand residents. The readiness of theft victims to report theft incidents to the police remained virtually unchanged in 2013.

Thefts from passenger cars reduced by nearly half

Over the period 2005-2013, theft from passenger cars was reduced dramatically. In 2013, the police recorded 5.7 of this type of offences per one thousand residents, versus 10.3 in 2005. The number of registered bicycle thefts also decreased during this period: from 8.6 to 6.4 per one thousand residents.

The number of home burglary incidents fell marginally in 2013 to 5.2 per one thousand residents. In prior years, the number of home burglary incidents had risen continually from one year to the next. In 2005, the rate was 4.3 per one thousand residents. The police recorded an increase in pickpocketing offences in 2013 to 2.5 per one thousand residents. The four types of theft mentioned above account four just over half of all theft offences in the Netherlands.

Number of thefts in Amsterdam twice the nationwide average

Last year, 87 registered thefts occurred per one thousand residents in Amsterdam, twice the nationwide average. The municipalities of Eindhoven and Maastricht occupied second and third place with 77 and 71 thefts per one thousand residents respectively. The number of registered thefts was also relatively high in the municipalities of Nijmegen and Utrecht (67 and 65 per one thousand residents).

Home burglary rate high in Alphen-Chaam

With 11.3 home burglaries per one thousand residents, the municipality of Alphen-Chaam recorded the highest rate. In the municipalities of Culemborg and Almere, the rate was approximately twice the nationwide average. The municipalities of Gouda, Bussum and Leeuwarden were in fourth, fifth and sixth place.

Muiden has highest rate of registered thefts from passenger cars

Proportionally, the municipality of Muiden recorded the highest number of registered thefts from passenger cars last year: 24.2 per one thousand residents, followed by the municipalities of Utrecht, Blaricum, Ouder-Amstel and Eindhoven.
