Consumer confidence growing further

Dutch consumers were slightly less pessimistic in December than in the preceding month. The consumer confidence index climbed 2 points to -16. The mood among consumers has improved considerably over the past few months, although pessimism still prevails.

Consumers were less negative about the economic climate than in November. The component indicator economic climate improved 4 points in December to reach -12.  Consumers’ opinions about the economic situation over the past 12 months improved, but their opinions on the economic climate in the next 12 months remained unchanged.

The component indicator reflecting consumers’ willingness-to-buy remained stable at -19. Consumers’ opinions about their own financial situation over the past 12 months deteriorated marginally, whereas their expectations about their financial situation in the next 12 months were somewhat less negative. Consumers also thought the time was less unfavourable to buy expensive items, like washing machines and TV sets.
