Commuter

A commuter is defined as a person who travels from his municipality of residence to his workplace situated in another municipality.
Data on municipality of residence and workplace are based on the Policy administration. The Policy administration is the source for employment figures. Employment figures are provided by the Institute for Implementation of Employees’ Insurances (UWV) and based on wage data of employees. The number of jobs of employees in the Netherlands is based on this source.
The Policy administration does not include the address of the workplace. These data are found in the statistic Distribution of jobs by region and economic activity. If a company or institution is located in only one municipality, all jobs are allocated to this municipality. If a company or institution is located in more than one municipality, information on the distribution of jobs by municipality is provided by the company or the institution. A specially developed algorithm is used to allocate an employee to a particular municipality on the basis of the municipality of residence, the distance to the workplace and the total number of employees in all locations of the company or institution in a particular municipality.
