Energy consumption deals with the final consumption of energy, as laid down in the European Directive for Renewable Energy in 2009, i.e. the use of energy for heating, lighting or as a source of energy for cars, machinery and other appliances. Non-energetic final consumption is the use of energy carriers for the manufacture of a product which is no source of energy. The energy used for the production process remains incorporated in the product. Instances of energetic final use are the combustion of natural gas in boilers, electricity consumption by households and the consumption of motor fuels for the propulsion of transport vehicles.
