Elderly households (over the age of 65)

Multi-person households are categorised by age on the basis of the age of the reference person. In mixed-gender couples, the reference person is the man, in same-gender couples it is the eldest partner, in single-parent households the parent. In other types of households, the reference person is the eldest male adult, or, if there is no male adult in the household, the eldest female adult.
