Staff cuts
Staff cuts are predominantly the result of the reorganisation planned for 2012. A general recruitment freeze was introduced last year for civilian personnel and a selective recruitment freeze for military personnel. In anticipation of the reorganisation, many people employed by the Ministry of defence left.
Despite the freeze on recruitment, the number of air force personnel remains unchanged and naval personnel increased. This is due to a shift of personnel from the central units (Department for Military Equipment and Support Services) to the military branches. There was also a shift of personnel from the central units to the army, but the influx did not offset the effects of the recruitment freeze.
Data on full-time jobs are based upon the actual number of people employed by the Ministry of Defence at the end of the year. Not included are people employed by the agencies of the Ministry of Defence (Defence Telematics Organisation, Defence Infrastructure Organisation and Catering Organisation Paresto) and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service.
