Although the amount of wages of an employee cannot be compared with the level of profits of someone who is self-employed because of differences in concept, it is interesting to compare the increases in earnings in the two groups. Wage is defined here as the gross wage used as the basis for social security contributions, per full-time equivalent. Profits are not measured per full-time equivalent but per person, as no information is available on the hours worked by the self-employed.
