On 1 January 2010, there were more than 863 thousand businesses with 956 thousand establishments. Densely populated areas have the highest number of establishments per 10 square kilometres (km). The number of establishments in the sector hotels and restaurants per 10 thousand residents is highest in tourist areas.

The most densely populated areas also have the highest amount of business establishments per square km, e.g. the Randstad region and the major cities. Only 4 municipalities have more than 3 thousand establishments 10 square km, i.e. The Hague, Amsterdam, Bussum and Haarlem.
West Frisian Islands have highest number of establishments in the sector hotels and restaurants per 10 thousand residents
The 5 Dutch West Frisian Islands top the list of municipalities with the highest amount of establishments in the sector hotels and restaurants per 10 thousand residents (between 180 and 330 per 10 thousand residents). They are followed by the municipalities of Veere, Gulpen-Wittem and Valkenburg aan de Geul, which also attract many tourists and have between 100 and 128 establishments per 10 thousand residents. Higher concentrations are mainly found along the North Sea coast and in the hilly, southern part of the province of Limburg.

Manufacturing industry mainly near road networks and waterways
Most industrial activities outside the Randstad region are found in a strip running straight through the southern part of the Netherlands from Bergen op Zoom to Nijmegen/Arnhem. There are also many industrial activities around the municipality of Eindhoven and in the vicinity of Enschede and in the south of the Netherlands in a strip of land along the river Maas.
Transport and storage companies also found near waterways
The highest concentrations of business locations in the transport and storage sector per 10 square km are found along the North Sea Canal, the Rijnmond area and near large rivers like the Rhine and the Maas.
