Cancer population screening
Preventive screening in the Netherlands for cervical and breast cancer is done on a regular basis. Some life-threatening diseases can be diagnosed early, thus improving the chance of recovery. In a population screening programme, high-risk groups are tested for defects. Participation in population screening programmes takes place on a voluntary basis.
Cervical population screening was started in 1976 and focuses on women in the 30–60 age bracket. These women are invited to subject to a smear test every five years.
Breast cancer screening started in 1990. The target group are women aged between 50 and 75. These women are invited to have their breasts X-rayed on a biennial basis (mammography).
In 2013, the population screening programme for intestinal cancer will be started. The target group consists of men and women in the age category 55–75.
