Nearly 200 thousand people from Central and Eastern Europe registered in the Netherlands

The number of people from Central and Eastern Europe registered in the Netherlands includes:
- Nationals from Central and Eastern Europe belonging to the first generation registered in the municipal population registers (GBA) as Dutch residents on 1 January 2011
- Nationals from Central and Eastern Europe not registered in the GBA in January 2011.
Among the first generation of residents in the Netherlands with a Central or East European background, the ethnic background of them and their parents is decisive. Taking into account a person’s ethnic background provides a more complete picture of their nationality, because persons who have acquired the Dutch nationality later in life are also included.
For workers from Central and Eastern Europe not included in the GBA, nationality is an indication of ethnic background.

In addition to the nearly 200 thousand nationals from Central and Eastern Europe, there were 41 thousand nationals from Central and Eastern Europe belonging to the second generation in the Netherlands; these people were born in the Netherlands. A limited number of students from Central and Eastern Europe (no more than a few thousand) are also currently living in the Netherlands and have (as yet) not registered as residents or workers.
The registration currently available does not provide a clear picture of the total number of self-employed from Central and Eastern Europe who are not registered as residents or workers.
