Mobile phones

Mobile phones mainly use UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) signals. GPRS was the first system available in the Netherlands, which allows access to the Internet regardless of location. GPRS is mainly used for mobile phones and smartphones. The download speed of GPRS is 52 kbps and the system provides nationwide coverage allowing access to the Internet almost everywhere. UMTS is the faster successor of GPRS. With a maximum download speed of 384 kbps, UMTS is considerably faster than GPRS. UMTS currently also provides nationwide coverage.

The differences between GPRS and UMTS are mainly found in the maximum download speed and the extent of nationwide coverage.
