Institutional households consist of one or more persons for whom housing and daily necessities are provided by a professional third party. Elderly people in institutional households are mainly residents in care and nursing homes who have lived there (or will live there) for longer than one year. The figures presented in this article refer to people who are living in such an institutional household according to the municipal population registration. More people may be staying in these institutional households than are officially registered at these addresses. Sometimes people stay in a nursing home for a limited period ( e.g. for convalescence), or residents may still be registered at the address of their partner or children who live independently.
