Imports of renewable electricity are counted as imports of Guarantees of Origin (Protocol Monitoring Renewable Energy, AgencyNL, 2010). A Guarantee of Origin is a certificate a supplier must present, if they sell electricity labelled as green. Suppliers can apply for this certificate, if they have generated green electricity themselves or if they have bought green electricity from other producers in the Netherlands or abroad. In the Netherlands, these certificates are issued by CertiQ.
