Retail turnover 1 percent higher in July
Dutch retailers generated 1 percent more turnover in July than one year previously. The shopping-day pattern in July 2010 was, however, more favourable than in July 2009. After a rough correction for this positive effect, turnover was about the same as twelve months previously. Retail prices were nearly 2 percent higher than in July 2009.
Turnover in the non-food sector was down by almost 2 percent in July. In most branches sales were at or below the level of July 2009. Just like in June, consumer electronics shops and shops selling household appliances generated higher turnovers.
Turnover in the food sector improved more than 4 percent relative to July 2009. The more favourable shopping-day pattern had a positive effect on the food sector. Prices increased by almost 2 percent, whereas over the first six months of 2010 food prices had dropped marginally. Supermarket sales were up by over 5 percent, but specialised food shops faced nearly 4 percent loss of turnover relative to July 2009.
Petrol stations realised a 3 percent higher turnover. July’s fuel prices were still substantially up on one year previously. Petrol stations account for nearly one tenth of total retail turnover.
