Numbers of emigrants referred to in this article have a native Dutch background, i.e. persons of whom both parents were born in the Netherlands. Additionally, 57 thousand emigrants with a foreign background, i.e. persons with at least one parent born abroad, left the Netherlands. Altogether, there were 85 thousand emigrants in 2009. Emigration figures are published excluding the so-called administrative corrections (emigrants who have had their names removed from the municipal population registers and have left for unknown destinations). Last year, approximately 26 thousand people left the Netherlands for unknown destinations.
