Flash divorce regulation rescinded

Since 1 March 2009 it is no longer possible to convert a marriage into a registered partnership. Only couples who converted their marriage into a partnership before that date can annul this partnership without going to court.

The regulation was rescinded because flash divorces were not always recognised as a divorce outside the Netherlands, and because no arrangements for - for example - children could be laid down by a judge in court.
