Number of jobs plummets

The number of jobs of employees was 143 thousand lower in the third quarter of 2009 than one year previously. This decrease is twice the size of that in the second quarter, when there 72 thousand jobs fewer than twelve months previously. Before the second quarter the number of jobs in the Netherlands had shown a continuous increase. 

The total number of jobs of employees (full-time and part-time) in the Netherlands amounted to nearly 7.9 million. In terms of full-time jobs, this comes to 5.9 million, 100 thousand lower than the third quarter of 2008.

Employment is subject to seasonal variation. After adjustment for seasonal effects, the number of jobs in the third quarter was 0.6 percent down on the preceding quarter.
