Fewer guests in overnight accommodations

In the first four months of this year, 7.6 million guests spent the night in Dutch accommodations, a decrease by over 2 percent relative to the same period in 2008. The number of overnight stays dropped by nearly 3 percent to 18 million. Unlike hotels, overnight accommodations performed well.

Fewer foreign guests and fewer nights spent in hotels

The number of foreign guests visiting the Netherlands dropped by 6 percent to 2.8 million.
With 4.8 million, the number of Dutch guests remained more or less the same.

The hotel sector suffered the hardest hit: the number of hotel guests declined by more than 4 percent to 5.3 million. The number of overnight stays also dropped, from 9.6 to 9 million.

More guests in holiday park accommodations and camp sites

Overnight accommodations like holiday parks, group accommodations and camp sites achieved good results. Over the period January–April, they welcomed 2.3 million guests, a growth by nearly 3 percent relative to the same period last year. The number of overnight stays also rose marginally, to 9.1 million. Holiday parks and camp sites mainly accounted for the increase. Presumably, April’s favourable weather conditions also played a part in this respect.
