Consumer confidence stable

For the second month running, consumer confidence remained unchanged. The indicator stood at -24 in July. This means pessimists still clearly outnumbered optimists. Confidence is stable after a substantial improvement in April and May this year.

The consumer confidence index consists of five component indicators. These also remained stable relative to June. In July, consumers were as negative about the economic climate as in June, the indicator stood at -47. Willingness to buy remained low and stood at -8 in July versus -9 in June.

With 86 percent anticipating a rise over the next 12 months, consumers remain apprehensive about unemployment. The percentage is four times as high as in July 2008.
