Holidays popular with Europeans

Europeans like going on holiday. Dutch people aged 15 years and older, for example, went on holiday an average 1.4 times in 2007. They spend at least 4 nights away from home, in the Netherlands or abroad. Danes and Germans take about the same number of holidays as the Dutch. People from Luxembourg took the most holidays in 2007: 1.8 times on average per person; Romanians went on holiday least often: only 0.3 holidays per person on average.

Dutch in holiday spending top 5

The Dutch spent more than 12 billion euro on holidays in 2007, and ranked fifth on the EU holiday spending list. This amount is the equivalent of just over 900 euro per capita. The French spent most on holidays in 2007: 81 billion, followed by the Germans with just over 78 billion euro.

Most nights spent in hotels

Foreign guests in EU countries spend most nights in a hotel. Eight out of every ten foreign visitors to the Netherlands in 2007 stayed in a hotel. Only in Denmark and Sweden did more than 30 percent of foreign visitors stay in other types of accommodation such as camp sites, holiday cottages or group accommodation.
