Number of bankruptcies more than doubled
Over 640 businesses and institutions (excluding one-man businesses) were declared bankrupt in April 2009. This is slightly down on March, but more than double the figure in April 2008.
As the number of businesses declared bankrupt in a particular month is closely related to the number of days courts are in session, it may vary strongly from month to month. Therefore, the three-monthly moving average is a more reliable indicator.
The three-monthly moving average increased further, to over 620 in April. In March this year, the number amounted to slightly over 560. Compared to one year previously, the indicator more than doubled.
