Labour participation
A distinction is made between net and gross labour participation. This article reflects gross labour participation.
Gross labour participation is defined as the share of the employed and unemployed labour force in the population. Gross labour participation reflects the readily available labour supply consisting of people who work at least twelve hours a week and people who would like to work at least twelve hours a week, are actively searching for jobs and are promptly available for the labour market (the unemployed labour force).
Net labour participation is defined as the share of the employed labour force in the population. The employed labour force consists of all people who actually participate on the labour market, i.e. who work in paid jobs of at least twelve hours a week.
