Renewable energy sources

Renewable electricity is generated by wind turbines, hydropower, solar energy or biomass.

In this article, renewable electricity is expressed as a percentage of total Dutch electricity generation. 

In other publications, renewable electricity is often expressed as a percentage of total domestic electricity consumption. The reason is that the government’s objective is to have 9 percent of electricity consumption covered by renewable energy sources in 2010. The Netherlands has agreed to this objective on a European level.
The percentage of renewable electricity in terms of production is higher than in terms of consumption, because total Dutch electricity production is lower than total consumption. The difference between consumption and production is related to net imports of electricity.
